As our parents start to get older, getting around the house can start to feel more difficult. Grandparents and great-grandparents just don't have the mobility they once had, and because of this, it is important to make sure there is nothing loose lying around that could trip them up. A slight fall can do a lot of damage to someone of old age. At Crescent Senior Living, we want everyone who is currently monitoring a parent or aunt due to their age to be aware of everyday items that can be a tripping hazard for older folks.
Here are some items we recommend everyone keep their eye out for:
Throw rugs tend to be one of the main reasons why senior citizens fall in their home. Their natural tendency to bunch up and easily go undetected can be a nightmare for people of all ages. Being up there in age can only make these rugs even more of a hazard. Since many rugs can have a ton of value, we recommend doing your best to move any throw rugs into rooms that are not used as much.
Since throw rugs belong on the top of our list, everyday clutter would have to be second on our list. Anyone with young children can easily end up with many different obstacles throughout the house. Between trash, bottles, and toys, there are many things lying around on the ground that can be very dangerous.
This one may be a surprise to some but poor and dim lighting can be just as bad as any physical obstacles. There’s a good chance that most trips or stumbles happen when the lights are off. Rooms that don't have enough light in them can easily result in someone of old age taking a spill. The same holds true for rooms that are too bright. A glare can result in someone not being able to see what is directly in front of them.
